THE STORY

This whiskey was created by Brown-Forman in 1996 to fill the niche of premium-but-accessible bourbons.  The Woodford Reserve brand serves as homage to the treasured Woodford Reserve Distillery, a National Historic Landmark with roots that trace back to 1812.  It’s mash bill is composed of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley.

THE FLAVOR PROFILE

The nose is heavy of rich dried fruits, hints of orange and mint with an overlay of tobacco.  Palate is rich and chewy with toffee, caramel, spices and chocolate.  No shortage of body yet without punchy ethanol notes.

CATEGORY DESCRIPTION

Bourbon is a type of American whiskey, a barrel-aged distilled liquor made primarily from corn and often rounded out with malted barley and rye (though some brands utilize wheat).  The name “bourbon” was not applied until the 1850s, and did not become widespread until the 1870s.  Bourbon must be made within the United States, be composed of at least 51% corn, and aged in new charred oak barrels.
