Matchbook “Old Head” Chardonnay

John and wife Lane Giguiere, along with John’s brother, Karl Giguiere, started R.H. Phillips Winery in 1983 on 10 acres in the Dunnigan Hills.  Decades later, after selling this highly successful winery, Matchbook was created as a more refined, thought out version of its predecessor.

Generous amounts of oak and malolactic fermentation are evident on the nose, characteristic of classic California Chardonnay.  Tree fruit shows up on a medium-plus bodied palate.  Round and balanced.

With over 100,000 acres in production, Chardonnay claims more acreage than any other wine grape in California, and reigns supreme as the most popular wine consumed in the US (that’s including reds and whites).  Chardonnay is prized because it’s a hardy, vigorous vine that readily reflects “terroir” and has an incredibly versatile flavor spectrum.  California Chardonnay is often conflated with heavily oaked, buttery wines, but there are plenty of unoaked, acidic examples.
