New Belgium was created in 1991 by Kim Jordan and Jeff Lebesch who drew tremendous inspiration from various beer trips across Europe, specifically those in Belgium. The Fat Tire beer (which for a period of time was like liquid gold) pays homage to a particularly influential bike-trip the couple took through Belgium.
THE FLAVOR PROFILE
Slightly sweet aroma with notes of biscuit and caramel. The palate is off-sweet with layers of toasted malts. Easy to drink and delicious.
CATEGORY DESCRIPTION
The American amber ale is akin to a pale ale with more body, more caramel richness, and a balance more towards malt than hops (although in some cases hop rates can be significant). That emphasis on caramel richness makes crystal malt a critical ingredient while brewing.
